PostHeaderIcon Dealing with a Dominant Dog

So many dog owners have a hard time handling their dominant dogs. There are certain breeds that are worse for over dominant behavior than others, but any dog will take advantage of a weak ruler within the pack.

First of all, you need to establish your dominance. You need to become the alpha male. You cant expect your dog to listen to you if you have no dominance over them.

Being dominant doesnt mean being cruel to your dog. It means setting boundaries and sticking to them. Discipline your dog for bad behaviors, and reward them for good. You need to be consistent, or else they are going to get confused.

Once you become pack leader, you need to walk the fine line that every leader walks. You cant be mean to your dog, and expect them to trust you enough to listen to you. You need to be kind, yet stern, and create a loving and trusting relationship with your pet.

Another way to discourage dominant behavior in your dog is to stop playing aggressive games with your dog. Dont play tug of war, or wrestle with them. This encourages bad behaviors, and puts you on an even playing field with your dog, where you are battling for dominance on a dogs turf. In your dogs eyes, whoever wins tug of war, wins a little bit more control over the pack.

If you stop the struggle for power in your house, you will all be happier for it. There is always going to be a struggle for power, but you need to stay on top of it. Stay consistent with your dog, and you will be rewarded with a dog that is a joy to be around.
